How to Find What’s Actually Reinforcing for Your Child

Have you ever heard your BCBA tell you to find a reinforcer and felt stuck wondering, “What is reinforcing for my child?” If so, you’re not alone! In ABA, reinforcements can be challenging to identify, but they are essential for motivation and learning. Below are some strategies that BCBAs and RBTs use to find reinforcers during sessions:

Observation-Based Preference Assessment

This method is particularly useful for our earliest learners. Simply observe your child in a playroom, at home, or even in a store. Take note of what they naturally gravitate towards and how long they engage with different items. Typically, the object they interact with the longest can serve as ABA reinforcements.

Choice-Based Preference Assessment

This involves offering your child two items and asking them to choose. Once they select an item, allow them access to it. After some time, present the choice again. If they consistently pick the same item, it is likely a strong reinforcer.

Testing Potential Reinforcers

Once you have identified potential reinforcers, it’s time to test them out! Ask your child to complete a simple task in exchange for the item. If they are willing to work for it, you have found an effective ABA reinforcement! Over time, you can build upon this by introducing similar items or expanding the reinforcer options to keep motivation high.

Why in ABA, Reinforcements Matters

Reinforcers are a fundamental part of ABA therapy because they help increase motivation, encourage skill development, and improve behavior. By identifying what truly motivates your child, we can create a positive learning environment that fosters growth and success.
